Kartchner Caverns is an absolute gem in southern Arizona. I drove down Friday afternoon and we were able to get camp all set up, and this time the only thing we forgot was our folding chairs. The RTIC coolers make great seats if you were wondering. The next day we had two scheduled tours into the caves. The first one was the Throne Room, we started on the trolley as it drove us right up to the entrance of the caves. We walked into air chambers to lock the moisture into these living caves. The darkness was lit by lights along the path and the formations inside where absolutely stunning. Kubla Khan is the largest formation inside towering over 50 ft, and has taken thousands of years to make. After our short lunch break we proceeded in the our second cave which was the Big Room. This part of the cave is only open during certain parts of the year due to bats migrating in and mating. This side has its own unique stalagmites and stalactites. We also were fortunate enough to see a cave scorpion which is very rare. Anyhow we hiked back to our campsite and cooked dinner while battling the strong winds. As we crawled into the tent it started to drizzle which made for a very calming night of sleep. Overall I would recommend this to anyone who likes caves and wants to learn a lot about the formations, age and other knowledge about caves. Note; Pictures are not allowed inside the cave so I have only the beautiful scenery surrounding the grounds. Lastly, we made a pit stop in Tombstone for breakfast and to walk around a little bit and made our journey back to Phoenix.
